Get ready for the first Devon Air Ambulance Heli Hike!
Embarking on a Heli Hike fundraising adventure for Devon Air Ambulance will be an exciting and rewarding experience. To help you make the most of this very special event, which takes in some of Devon’s most beautiful coastline, we’ve brought together ten essential tips for first-time participants.
1. Get fit and ready
It helps to feel physically prepared. Incorporate regular walking and hiking into your routine to build stamina and strengthen your legs ahead of time so you can enjoy the hike when the time comes.
2. Choose appropriate footwear
Invest in quality hiking boots that provide support, comfort, and grip. Make sure to break them in well before the event to avoid blisters and discomfort. Always have some blister plasters stowed just in case, and double socks can also add a layer of comfort. Some people suggest choosing walking footwear that is a half-size larger than your regular shoes or boots to allow for the extra socks.
3. Dress in layers
Weather conditions can change rapidly, especially in the southwest when weather blows in from the Atlantic quickly. Wear layers that you can easily add or remove as needed. Lightweight, moisture-wicking materials are ideal. A lightweight waterproof is also a good shout. While temperatures are likely to be mild mid-summer, getting drenched can be uncomfortable and add to the weight you have to carry. A coverall for your rucksack is also a good preventative measure.
4. Pack essentials smartly
Bring a small backpack with essentials such as water, snacks, a first aid kit, sunscreen, and the map we will furnish you with. Keep it light but ensure you have everything you might need. Although the longest route is 26 miles long, and even with an early start, depending upon your pace it may be that you are returning in the hours of darkness, so a head torch is a good idea – just in case.
5. Know your route
Familiarise yourself with the hike route and terrain. Study maps and guides provided by the fundraising team and plan your journey accordingly, getting to know the peaks and troughs, rivers and points where it might be nice to pause. The south west coast path is well-loved and well-trod, plus our team will be available to help you to stay safe and on track. Having that extra bit of familiarity ahead of time can help you to make the most out of your experience.
6. Stay hydrated
Carry enough water to keep yourself hydrated throughout the hike. Consider using a hydration pack for easier access while walking and take opportunities to top up when you can.
7. Pace yourself
Don’t rush. The Heli Hike is about enjoying the journey as much as reaching the destination. Maintain a steady, comfortable pace to conserve energy and enjoy the scenery. It won’t do to head off at speed only to feel wiped out a few miles into your hike.
8. Follow safety guidelines
Adhere to all safety guidelines and instructions provided by the Devon Air Ambulance team. Listen to stewards en-route and stay within designated paths. This is for your safety as well as your enjoyment of the event.
9. Capture the memories
Bring a camera or smartphone to capture the stunning views and memorable moments of your adventure. Make sure it’s easily accessible but secure and weather-protected if it rains. We’d love you to tag us on your social channels!
10. Enjoy and reflect
Take time to appreciate the beauty of Devon and the hundreds of people who live in and enjoy our county that your fundraiser is helping to support every day. Your walk makes an important difference to us and we are so grateful for your support.
Prepare well and follow these tips to ensure a safe, enjoyable, and memorable Heli Hike adventure. Happy hiking!
