Snap, Crackle and Pop – the Banger Rally story

Barry, Melvyn and Roger - Snap, Crackle and Pop

Three friends took on the Banger Rally Challenge in support of our service!

Dedicated fundraising team, Snap, Crackle and Pop, visited our head office in Exeter at the end of 2023 to present us with their amazing fundraising total of over £1,130.

Making up this tremendous trio are Barry Cooke – ‘Snap’, Melvyn Duggan – ‘Crackle’ and Roger Tonkin – ‘Pop’ who describe themselves as three old geezers from Devon. They decided to take on the Banger Rally Or Bust challenge out of the blue – an incredible journey  from Charlestown, St Austell, all the way to St. Tropez in a blue Ford Mondeo. The trio said:

Our aim was to raise as much money as possible for this magnificent organisation which has helped countless people over the years. It was challenging work and a great experience. We often see the DAA helicopter near our homes.

Adorned with car stickers, the exciting journey took the team away from the typical tourist hotspots and into the unknown, with glorious sunshine and awe-inspiring sights across Luxembourg, Switzerland, Monaco, and experiences such as evening meals al fresco and taking a dip in the water in Savona – an experience to remember.

Over 120 enthusiastic people participated in the unique challenge with around 50 cars taking part, so it was an incredible accomplishment when Snap, Crackle and Pop secured second place and won the Rally Runners Up trophy.

‘Not bad for three old geezers!’ said Barry who with his team felt proud to have completed the event. He said:

We would like to thank these fantastic fundraisers, who are a great bunch, for embarking on such a huge journey. It was a big task to take on and to come second out of so many in a Ford Mondeo was just fantastic!”

The Devon Air Ambulance service is for the critically ill or injured across Devon and beyond and is only possible due to the wonderful support of our amazing fundraisers and supporters, we simply could not do this without you.
