Volunteer Simon Card, with one of our crew

The spotlight on a volunteer who has made an enormous contribution to Devon Air Ambulance over the years.

In 2011, Simon Card moved from Buckinghamshire to Seaton in Devon for a lifestyle change. Along with his wife, Simon took over the running of a local Bed & Breakfast and it was here that he first spotted the Devon Air Ambulance collection tin on the communal dining table. Having worked with charities in the past, Simon enquired about how he could get involved and begin to support the charity.

Simon began hosting talks in local communities, educating people and raising awareness about Devon Air Ambulance. Over the years, he has participated in supporting the fundraising team at county shows and other events, and at cheque presentations. Simon said:

Volunteering with DAA is very rewarding. The staff are good people who really value their volunteers and look after them.”

Simon’s history and experience in public speaking, sales and marketing make him the perfect volunteer to support us with fundraising and awareness-raising events where we aim to reach new audiences. Lottie Clark, Community and Events Manager for Devon Air Ambulance said:

‘Fundraising volunteers play a crucial role. They help to facilitate us by attending a great many fêtes, agricultural shows, quizzes, bake sales, concerts, dances, festivals and more across the county, enabling us to reach further across the county. Our volunteers help to raise awareness of our work, engage with the communities that support us, and raise the vital funds that keep our service responding. Without them, we couldn’t save as many lives as we do.’

Simon added:

‘I really enjoy being a part of the charity. Firstly, anyone might need the services at some point and secondly, there is no government funding for air ambulances so anything we can do to raise funds and awareness is important.

‘There is never a huge expectation of commitment; just do what you can do to help and any time you can give is greatly appreciated. I would be very happy to talk to anyone who wants to volunteer to give advice and mentoring.’

Simon’s ability to pick up on the nuances in conversation and identify areas of interest to members of the community are essential when networking, and Simon is now assisting our Philanthropy Manager and the fundraising team on an exciting new project where his networking skills are essential.

‘As a volunteer, you are the link between your community and the organisation,’ says Simon. ‘I feel that it is important for volunteers to be proud of their organisation’.
